Corsages & Boutonnieres
First, a little history fact—Corsages and boutonnieres originated from the French and date back to the 1700s. The sweet, beautiful scent of the flowers were worn to important events in hopes to ward off evil spirits, diseases, and even body odor. Flowers were ancient perfume! I don’t blame them either, I’d want to smell like fresh flowers too!
Corsages and boutonnieres are most commonly seen here in the West for Prom and Homecoming Season! They can also be seen in weddings, showers, and sometimes funerals.
There are 2 kinds of boutonnieres I make, and that’s the pin-on and the floral pocket square. A pin-on is most commonly one or two flowers wrapped in ribbon and then pinned onto the the left chest! Looking for a non-traditional boutonniere? I’d recommend a floral pocket square! This is option is only doable with a suit jacket or vest with a front pocket. The flowers are designed on a square that slides into the pocket of the suit jacket and it appears as though the flowers are softly growing out of the jacket pocket. My favorite part about this option is there are no pins involved, the pocket square simply slides into the jacket pocket and it’s ready to flaunt! One variation for both options that I love, is to ditch the flowers and use a succulent or just greenery! This makes such a neat statement piece on a suit, vest, or dress shirt!
There are two types of corsages I can create: wrist and pin-on. Pin-ons are more dated, as they are most commonly seen in grandma’s old pictures and are worn pinned onto the left chest! They are similar to the boutonniere but include 4-8 flowers, so they’re much larger and showier. Wrist corsages however, are more commonly seen, more modern, and worn like a bracelet on the wrist (shown in picture).
The wrist corsage is most commonly seen here in Colorado for Prom and Homecoming. Each couple attending school dances will most commonly have matching pairs of corsages and or boutonnieres to signify them together as a couple.
Looking for something more non-traditional instead of a corsage? I’d recommend a “tuzzy-muzzy”, as it’s called in the South. A “tuzzy-muzzy” is a miniature hand held bouquet that is carried like a mini bride’s or bridesmaids bouquet, and it takes the place of wearing a wrist corsage. This is my favorite option for prom and homecoming, as it makes for AMAZING pictures!! Sometimes the wrist corsages tend to get hidden in photos but the “tuzzy-muzzy” is always seen in photos since it’s harder to hide, and makes a great focal point to accompany the beautiful dresses and suits! Again…MY MOST FAVORITE OPTION!!
Overall, there are many floral options to wear to your next event: the pin-on corsage, the wrist corsage, the pin-on boutonniere, the “tuzzy muzzy”, and the floral pocket square! With all of these styles available, I am so excited to create one that is made just for you that perfectly ‘suits’ your style!
